About the event

The Great Rites are five times a year in which nature is celebrated and which correspond to the Solstices, Equinoxes and the Commemoration of the Dead. On these occasions Damanhur offers guests and friends, who wish to share these moments, the opportunity to be present on the territory of the Federation during these magical moments.

Solstices and Equinoxes
The rites that sanction the passage between one season of the year and another have been carried out on all continents since the beginning of human history. At Damanhur, we consider the Equinoxes and Solstices to be sacred moments par excellence.

The entire community of Damanhur gathers to celebrate these important moments within the large stone circles. On the day of each ritual, a fire representing the sun is lit. During the Solstices, a second fire represents the moon. The rite is divided into three phases: ignition, climax and extinguishing of the fire.

Damanhurians enter the circle each wearing a different colored robe according to seniority. They offer herbs to the fire, meditate, play and recite hymns and prayers composed by them. Most of the phases of the rite are accompanied by music and Sacred Dance.

Since the number of Damanhurians in recent years has increased, each rite is carried out on two or three different days to allow everyone to participate.

For this program it is required to have made a Damjl visit and to have followed the module "Introduction to the Great Rites of Damanhur". Some visits and areas of Damanhur are not suitable for children under 14 years of age; with respect to ages to participate in our activities click here to read the requirements before making the purchase.
